Greece proposed an alternative agreement to Macedonia to join NATO

Pannos Kammenos, Minister of National Defense of Greece, leader of the Independent Greeks party in the ruling coalition, suggested concluding a defense agreement with Skopje, Tirana, Sophia and Belgrade instead of approving an agreement with Macedonia to change its name. Kammenos voiced this development scenario in the United States during a meeting with Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell, the Macedonian News Agency in Athens (AMNA) reports on Wednesday, October 10.
Kammenos noted that the results of the recent referendum in Macedonia show that the majority of citizens of this country do not support the agreement with Greece, which, in his opinion, will contribute to irredentism (demands to protect Macedonian national minorities in the territories of neighboring countries).
The Minister believes that the agreement with Greece will not be ratified by Macedonia and presented an alternative plan, which, according to him, will implement the same geopolitical goals as the Prespa Treaty (signed by the foreign ministers of Greece and Macedonia on the bank of Lake Prespa - Ed.) but without addressing the issue of the name of Macedonia.
